Enjoy the latest E-Newsletter issue (January-February 2014) of BETA (Bulgarian English Teachers' Association, IATEFL Affiliate), where the South-West University of Bulgaria and its EL teaching alumni from Bulgaria and Blagoevgrad have a considerable share of activities.

The Faculty of Philology of the South-West University is this year's host of the 23rd  BETA-IATEFL Annual International Conference.  The  conference secretary and BETA committee member Dr. Zarina Markova represents SWU as one of the major centres  for English language teacher training in Bulgaria. The history of BETA-IATEFL owes much to one of its former presidents, Dr. Elisaveta Boyadzhieva and to Ivanichka Nestorova, a former committee member, who both established a solid tradition in the connections between BETA and the English language teachers from the Blagoevgrad region.
The English Studies at the South-West University date back to the early 1990s when the Faculty of Philology started the enrolment for the new regular courses of English Philology and Applied Linguistics based on the previous experience of ELT training and Bulgarian and English language studies. Today the courses in English and Bulgarian at the SWU serve as a platform for further studies of a number of world languages.
The 23rd BETA Conference will be held between11th – 13th April 2014, and the South-West University will again become the venue for this much-awaited event.  The English Section of the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, a co-organiser of the conference, will be represented by two plenary speakers and a series of presenters in the parallel sessions.
Featured in this issue: Interviews with two of the BETA-IATEFL 2014 Conference plenary speakers: Dr Desmond Thomas and Dr Gergana Apostolova and a couple of interesting papers. Forthcoming: the tenth issue of the BETA e-newsletter, with interviews with Dr Elisaveta Boyadzhieva and Dr Terry Lamb, President of FIPLV, the International Federation of Language Teacher Associations.
