History of the Department of Bulgarian Studies

The Department of Bulgarian Studies is part of the Faculty of Philology at the Southwest University “Neofit Rilski”. Currently two professors, three associate professors, and five assistant professors work in it.
Coming in place of the initially founded  Department of Bulgarian Language and Literature the Department of Bulgarian Studies is one of the first departments established at the Southwest University and prides itself on its long history. It began its life in 1976 as part of the Faculty for Pre-school and Primary School Teachers founded a year earlier as an affiliated institution of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The Faculty became the originating body of what is nowadays the Southwest University. Assoc. Prof. Tsanko Mladenov whose habilitation procedure was at the time underway was appointed Head of the then new Department of Bulgarian Language and Literature.  The Department was made up of specialists in various academic fields  – lecturers in Bulgarian language, Bulgarian Literature, Foreign Languages, Drama. Later this led to the division of the Department of Bulgarian Language and Literature into several new independent departments – Department of Bulgarian Studies, Department of Literature, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Theatre Arts.
In 1989 the Department of Bulgarian Studies became part of the newly established Faculty of History and Philology. Towards the end of 1991, after the splitting of the Faculty of History and Philology into the Faculty of History and the Faculty of Philology, the Department became part of the latter’s structure.
